D-Formation is the latest and last in a long list of pseudonyms
chosen by Dimas Carbajo, owner and label head of the Beat Freak Recordings
group. His career spans some 20 years and includes numerous international
hits like ?eWelcome (I Said Shut Up!) and ?eQue Idea?f but
it is as D-Formation that he has dedicated his time and efforts to
reinventing house and taking it to the next level. The choice of D-Formation
as an artistic name is in itself a statement and since the first use of this
name in 2003 (on the ironically titled ?eCarry On?f) D-Formation
has chosen to deform and deface and deconstruct house: remaking it and retaking
it to pastures greener and places that are meaner. Taking house home.
The pedigree of Beat Freak Recordings (probably the most respected house
label in the world) and it?fs fledgeling but established younger sister labels Intenso
Recordings, The Underground Sound of Madrid (TUSOM), Distinto Recordings
bears witness to the remarkable vision of this young Madrid based producer who
has always been thinking of the next step. Unusually for artists, D-Formation
is the proud owner of his entire back catalogue over the past decade.
More business minded or perhaps more visionary than the rest of his peers, he
set up King Records (parent company of Beat Freak Recordings)
over a decade ago together with Javier Martinez (the other half of
Dimas&Martinez, both business partner and friend) to exploit his
productions. It is now virtually the norm but at the beginning of
the nineties it was a radical and unexpected thing to do.
It is unsurprising then, in a career littered but not glittered with success,
that Dimas Carbajo would choose to continue to surprise and tire of churning
out hits with King Records (through the now legendary MD Records
label) which worked on all of the best dance floors of the world (especially in
Israel, Holland and the UK for some reason). A decision was taken to
leave it all behind and follow a pipe dream to set up a house label called Beat
Freak Recordings: a label which, needless to say, was to be received with
critical acclaim from its very first release and was to be a spawing ground for
many other artists and labels including all of the previously mentioned
sublabels and, long time friend, DJ Chus and his company, Stereo
Productions.
While productions and work released under the names Dimas&Martinez, DJ
Dimas and even just plain Dimas, have always been widely and wildly popular,
the success of tracks released as D-Formation like ?eStarstuff?f,
?eSigns&Portents?f and ?eThe Third Dimension?f (later remixed
by Victor Calderone) has been underlined by a surprisingly large amount
of critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Moreover, D-Formation?fs
magic touch has been confirmed by a welter of remixing commissions and numerous
requests for collaboration. Recent tracks that have benefitted from
additional production and remix by D-Formation include, amongst others, Victor
Calderone, Smokin?f Jo, Chus&Ceballos, The Askew, Xperimental Shop, Roman
Lieske and Jocelyn Brown.
Apart from a successful polifaceted career as writer, producer, remixer
and label head, it goes without saying that D-Formation is, was and
always will be one of the best house DJs in the world. He is also
probably one of the most innovative. Recent sessions in cities as far
removed as Sao Paolo, Tokyo, Sofia, Athens, London and Mexico DF
have left no room for doubt that not only is his house big enough for everyone
but he is reshaping, remodelling and reinventing house: taking house
home. A session from D-Formation is not just a session but more
akin to a seamless production, deeper and darker progressive house than you can
imagine, interspersed with lighter, faster, brighter sounds than you thought
imaginable: hearing is believing.
2005 meanwhile will be a busy year: as
well as releasing ?eAttack! (No Surrender, No Retreat)?f the long awaited new D-Formation
single there will be a new compilation called ?eTribe All?f. Further, the
fruits of studio work with Victor Calderone will see finally the light of day
as a single with Astrid on vocals on ?eIn Your Eyes?f in late 2005?c there may
well also be a D-Formation album by the end of the year. Other
projects include a remix and recreation of the track ?eCloud 9?f sung by
Claudia Brucken (ex-Propaganda) and written by Claudia with Martin
L Gore of Depeche Mode. ?eCloud 9?f will be the first maxi
single release by Claudia?fs new group Onetwo which also features Paul
Humphreys of OMD. Anything and everything else is possible if
not probable: expect the unexpected.
